Motunui Island
Scenario Description
Although Moana is from the fictional island Motunui some 3,000 years ago, the story and culture of Moana is based on the very real heritage and history of Polynesian islands such as Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti. While the story and culture of Moana are based on real Polynesian heritage, the island of Motunui, where Moana lives, is fictional. The movie draws heavily on the culture, legends, and history of Polynesian islands, including Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti. The production team created a map of Moana's journey, placing Motunui east of Tonga, near the real-world location of Niue. Te Fiti's island was based on Tahiti. The movie incorporates various aspects of Polynesian culture, including navigation, mythology, and traditions. Moana is the daughter of the chief of Motunui, chosen by the ocean to return the heart of Te Fiti to the goddess.
